The Words  to  “Look Before You Leap”   CD/album of songs

CD “Look Before You Leap”  (It’s A Jungle Out There)   look before you leap is a metaphor that can also mean think before you act, Look before you run,  . . . etc.
These are songs for presenting safety issues to children in a fun way.  Songs about sunburn, where you live, cars in the street, touching hot pans, electricity, insect bites, monsters/people, fire, wearing safety belts, helmets, reading street signs and peer pressure.

On a more serious note:  songs about child safety, sunburn, seat belts, tick and flea prevention,  emergency 911, child poisoning, abduction, stranger danger, fire safety, smoke detectors, traffic signs and traffic safety. . . .  but it’s much more fun than that !

SIGNS   Signs tell you when to go, Signs tell you when to stop, Signs tell you when it’s safe and when it’s not. 1. And if a sign is bright red if it’s got 8 sides it means you stop, If you see it up ahead you might save a life if someone else forgot You find it at the corner where 2 streets intersect. It’s so very important it could prevent a wreck. (CHORUS) 2. And when you make a turn let the traffic know where you wanna go, You can hold out your arm , hold it straight or bend your elbow, Don’t keep it to yourself, when your gonna turn , if you don’t know the rules, now it’s time to learn. (CHORUS) 3. And at a signal light there’s a choice of 3 red, yellow and green, It could be day or night if it’s red you stop it’s easy to see, The yellow is for caution, you wait until it’s safe, The green says you can go, But only when it’s safe.  4. If it’s a yellow sign, in a triangle, it’s time to share, The sign says yield and so, someone else can go, I think it’s only fair.

MONSTERS    There are monsters that you see in a movie and monsters on TV.  But sometimes the very worst monsters are the ones that look like you and me.  You can’t tell on the outside if that stranger is someone to trust,  But we should ask mommy or daddy first, That’s one thing I know is a must.  CHORUS – Most of the strangers you meet are good apples, Sweet and delicious inside But some of the people that look like good apples might make you wanna run and hide. Most of the strangers you meet are good apples and  would not hurt a fly, But sometimes inside a good looking apple is a heart all wormy and dried. If a stranger offers candy say no no if he offers you a ride well don’t go if they say mom or dad sent them then you’ll know it’s time to run away.      3. Now you may wonder why they are monsters if they look just like me and like you,  They’re not monsters because of the way they look, but because of the things that they do.       4. Now some of these monsters are strangers and some of these strangers are not. But you can’t be too careful while you decide which one is good and who’s not. (CHORUS)..You should tell on a monster who gives you a fright and don’t keep secrets that don’t feel right….You can say no  know.

They were pretty sheep they were very cute and every one wore a woolen suite but the the wolves and coyote knew they were good to eat.   Now the boy thought he would play a joke on his dad and friends and other folk by yelling wolf just to watch em run and run they did and very fast they were out of breath when they arrived at last to find that boy laughing at a joke he made for fun.   His dad was mad and they were very sore and that’s not all there’s still some more the boy thought he would play his game again. So he cried wolf just like before and they all ran to see what for but the boy said there’s no wolf it’s just pretend. The next day when it got dark the boy heard a sound like a shark sneaking through the prairie dirt and rocks. It was a pack of wolves they were comin near they were hungry and hard to hear they were seriously coming to dinner licking there chops.  The boy was shocked and terrified and sorry now that he had lied when just one day before he yelled that word.  But yell he must this was the test his heart beat hard under his breast.  He yelled the loudest wolf you ever heard.  He yelled out wolf he yelled their name he was surprised when no one came  he was to blame it was a shame and wrong They wouldn’t come he was ignored he tease them once and twice before and kids this is why I wrote this song.

THE FIRE BURNS   We all use fires to keep us warm and cook our food and we all need em’, Fireplaces Bar B Ques, Campfires for marshmallows, hot dogs and we eat em’,  A fire is good when you plan it and your careful how you use it, But accidents with fire can happen and some people will abuse it  CHORUS – And the fire burns and the children learn, Ouch, not to touch the fire and never play with matches.   2. The fireman is a friend of your’s he’s serious about your safety. The fireman learns to put out fires and save the people and their babies, We can help them if we all work together on the same team, Learn the fire safety rules and know exactly what you need  (CHORUS) The very first thing I want from you is to ask your family what to do, What if a fire begins to spread while your all sleeping in your beds, You need a plan a way to go, an escape plan that will let you know , How to get out of every room your in , You got to get out fast and save your skin,- -The fireman says you gotta get out fast , don’t stop for dolls or pets or cash, Let someone else worry about your stuff, Just save yourself that’s good enough. . . Plan ahead choose a meeting place , So we’ll know your safe see you face to face, Don’t go back in just wait and stay until the fireman says that it’s OK. . .There’s a thing about smoke you need to know if there’s a lot of it then get real low, Down to the ground where the air is cleaner, Hot air rises and gets meaner.     And if your clothes should start to burn, don’t run around, you gotta learn, Drop to the ground, cover face with hands and roll on the ground to kill the flames (CHORUS)  One more thing almost everyone knows, it’s something to warn you if a fire grows, it can keep you safe it’s good protector, You can hang it on the wall it’s smoke detector. What’s good about a detector is an important thing you don’t want to miss, If a spark of fire begins to grow when your asleep it will let you know.

PEER PRESSURE   Sometimes you want to dress and act just like your friends, you want them to like you even more, But if they’re doing something you know just isn’t right, it may be time to walk right out the door.  We all want to be loved, we all want to be liked, by our family, our teachers, but most of all our friends, They are the ones we are mostly thinking of.  2. Sometimes your friends are called your peers, you think a lot alike between your ears, you do what they want to you want to feel OK, Like lookin at them is like looking into a mirror. CHORUS -It’s peer pressure, it’s OK to say no, Peer Pressure, it’s OK to say no, no no no no no no  Peer pressure 3. The pressure is something your friend said, You feel just like your being lead, Your not sure you should do what someone wants you to, remember what teacher told you and what they said.(CHORUS) , BRIDGE- Don’t do what the others do if the others do what you wouldn’t do if you were not with the others, doin what you should not
